However, the industry must face significant challenges related to data quality, user trust and emerging regulations, according to a new report by Thetius and Lloyd's Register.

The report 'Beyond the Horizon: Opportunities and Obstacles in the Maritime AI Boom' analyses the impact of AI in areas such as route optimisation, predictive maintenance and energy management. AI makes it possible to analyse large volumes of data in real time, which is crucial for decision-making.
“AI is addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing the port and maritime industry,” the report states. For example, AI algorithms predict sea and weather conditions, allowing routes to be adjusted to improve fuel efficiency and reduce waiting times in ports.
Smart ports: AI as a driver of change
AI is fundamental in the evolution towards smart, more connected and automated ports. Platforms such as PortXchange, implemented in RotterdamThey use AI to predict bottlenecks and optimize berthing schedules. "In a pilot program, the platform managed to reduce vessel waiting times by 20%," the report highlights.
Another example is the pilot project of Safetytech Accelerator and Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) Powered by Awake.AI technology, the platform uses AI to analyze data and improve the accuracy of estimated time of arrival (OTA) predictions. "The 7% improvement in accuracy made port operations more efficient, reducing vessel downtime," the study states.
Predictive maintenance and cost reduction
AI is also transforming equipment maintenance. AI-based systems continuously monitor equipment and predict potential failures. "The use of AI for predictive maintenance has enabled companies to save substantial amounts," the report reveals.
Challenges of AI implementation
Despite the progress, the adoption of AI in the port sector faces challenges such as data quality, lack of standardization, and user mistrust. "For the technology to be widely accepted, port and maritime operators must be confident that AI systems make sound and safe decisions," the report emphasizes.
Ethical and regulatory aspects
The report also highlights the importance of considering the ethical impact of AI, especially with regard to the use of personal data and privacy. In addition, the need for uniform regulation to facilitate the adoption of AI technologies on a large scale is noted.
Assurance and verification of AI
Finally, the report underscores the importance of ensuring and verifying AI in port operations. "AI technologies used in ports and on ships must be rigorously tested and validated," it concludes.
