ACCIONA assumes operation and maintenance of one of the world's largest wastewater treatment plants in Egypt.

 

This project, valued at €35 million, consolidates the Spanish company's presence in water management in Egypt.

 

The agreement includes the execution of various rehabilitation and improvement works at two of the complex's plants, each with a capacity of 500,000 cubic meters per day (m3/day).

 

Gabal El Asfar is recognized as the largest wastewater treatment infrastructure Africa and Middle East, and the third largest in the world due to its impressive treatment capacity of 2.5 million m3/day. This gigantic facility is crucial to supplying the needs of the eastern part of Cairo, serving an estimated population of eight million people.

ACCIONA's Extensive Experience in the Egyptian Water Sector

 

This new contract underscores ACCIONA's extensive experience in water treatment in Egypt. The company has been actively involved in key water infrastructure projects in the country:

 

    Gabal El Asfar Expansion (2013): ACCIONA had already led the design, construction, and commissioning of an expansion at this same complex, increasing its capacity by 500,000 m3/day.

    Operation and Maintenance of Gabal El Asfar Phase I (2022): In consortium with DHCU, ACCIONA was awarded the contract to operate and maintain, as well as upgrade, the oldest wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in the complex, with a capacity of 1.5 million m3/day.

    Water Supply in New Cairo: The company has collaborated with CAPW on the operation of vital hydraulic infrastructure for the bulk water supply in New Cairo. This contract covers everything from water intake on the Nile River to treatment and storage for subsequent distribution.

    Construction of Water Treatment Plants: ACCIONA has participated in the construction of five other drinking water treatment plants in the country (Almerya, Rod el Farag, Mostorod, North Helwan I, and North Helwan II). These plants have a total treatment capacity of over 600,000 m3/day, benefiting more than six million people.

    Bahr Al Baqr WWTP: The company was also responsible for the engineering, design, supervision, and commissioning of the Bahr Al Baqr WWTP in northwest Egypt. With a capacity of 5.6 million m3/day, this plant is equipped with advanced technology to produce optimal quality water for agricultural irrigation.

 

ACCIONA currently operates the Abnoub-El Fath (80,000 m3/day), Sodfa-El Ghanayem (30,000 m3/day), El Ayat (30,000 m3/day) and Abu Simbel (6,000 m3/day) wastewater treatment plants, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable water management in the region.
