Aena will invest €13.000 billion in the Spanish airport network by 2031.

 

The president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, revealed at the airport in Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández An unprecedented investment plan for the Spanish airport network. The investment strategy focuses on three main axes. The first is to respond to the "Spectacular" growth in air traffic, which is expected to reach 320 million passengers this year. Sánchez emphasized the need to adapt the infrastructure to meet the growing demand of both passengers and airlines.

 

The second pillar seeks improve the passenger experience through comfort and security. The third axis is the social and environmental sustainabilityWith a clear commitment to decarbonization, 13.000 billion of the 1.500 billion will be allocated to technology and innovation projects to achieve the milestone of "net zero emissions" by 2030, two decades ahead of the sector's global commitment.

 

Sánchez highlighted the importance of air connectivity for the country's economic development, a "country increasingly open to the world" that prioritizes international tradeHe emphasized that, on average, a plane takes off or lands in Aena's network every 12 seconds, demonstrating the vitality of the sector. Recent estimates suggest that a 10% increase in air connectivity could boost per capita GDP by 0.5%.

 

The president also praised the "successful model" of Aena, describing it as one of the largest airport companies in the worldHe recalled that investment in the last five years has reached 3.000 billion euros, 70% more than in the previous period. This effort has allowed the network to handle a record number of 309 million passengers in 2024. For example, Alicante-Elche Airport, recognized as the best in Europe for the fifth time, will receive an investment of more than 1.000 billion euros to expand its terminal.
