The Global Gateway Forum 2025 , which focuses on the future of sustainable and resilient partnerships to boost global connectivity, was the setting for the presentation of the Green and Digital Corridor between the Port of Algeciras and Panama. This crucial initiative is based on a Memorandum of Understanding and has as its primary objective the decarbonization of maritime container traffic on one of the world's most strategic transoceanic routes: the one connecting the Panama Canal with the Strait of Gibraltar.
Representing Panama at the presentation were Carlos Guevara , Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Ángel Riera , Ambassador to the European Union, joining the other high-ranking Spanish officials. This project aligns directly not only with the EU's Global Gateway strategy but also with international climate commitments, such as the International Maritime Organization's ( IMO ) Net Zero Framework , the EU ETS , and the EU Maritime Fuel Regulation.
The president of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) , Gerardo Landaluce , highlighted the port's strategic vision in this area. "True to our Green Strategy , we are promoting coordinated investments in the supply of alternative fuels , such as biofuels, e-methanol, and ammonia; the development of electrical connections for ships (OPS) ; as well as the digitalization of logistics and operational efficiency , guaranteeing a comprehensive and scalable approach to climate-neutral maritime transport. These are measures we are already implementing, and with this project, we will do so in parallel with our project partners in Panama," Landaluce stated.
Initial feasibility studies for the Green and Digital Corridor project predict significant environmental impact. These include an estimated annual savings of 800.000 tons of CO2 . This reduction is equivalent to taking approximately 400.000 vehicles off the road , making this corridor a model for the energy transition in the global maritime and port sector.
Algeciras seeks to consolidate its position as a key player in the Global Gateway strategy, the €300.000 billion European investment plan aimed at achieving a transformative impact through the values of the European Union. It is worth recalling that the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) already presented the first of its initiatives integrated within this European framework in Costa Rica in September: the Digital Interoperability Project . This initiative seeks to boost bi-regional trade in fresh produce between Spain and Central America by connecting the Central American Digital Trade Platform and the Port Community System of the Port of Algeciras.
