CEOE Aragón has expressed its concern about the negative consequences of these closures, which affect both the international transport and the local economy. In particular, the closure of the Somport tunnel could last up to six months, which would also seriously impact the upcoming ski season and tourism in the region.
La CEOE Aragón The Spanish government has warned that trucks that normally use the Somport tunnel will have to make a 300-kilometre detour to cross the border at Irún, which will increase congestion in that area. The business entity urges the Spanish government to put pressure on France to speed up the repair of the road, as it did in 2018 for a stage of the project. In addition, CEOE Aragón underlines the need for a long-term structural investment in trans-Pyrenean connections. "It is essential to have 21st-century infrastructure in the central Pyrenees to avoid these repeated closures," the organization emphasizes. It also suggests the exceptional opening of the N-230 for vehicles transporting hazardous materials, in order to reduce alternative routes.
