In November of 2024, Bibby Marine, a Liverpool-based maritime company, signed a contract with Vigo Estuary Shipyards of the Armon Group to develop a zero-emission electric shipThis project has been made possible thanks to a loan of 66 million euros formalized by HSBC UK, with the support of the Spanish Export Credit Insurance Company (Cesce). Further, Bibby Marine has received a grant from the UK Government worth 22 million euros after winning the competition Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure (ZEVI).
The ship will be equipped with an advanced rechargeable battery system using hybrid engines powered by methanol and diesel. Its design will allow for direct charging at sea using wind turbines, thus ensuring its operational autonomy for up to 28 days without the need to return to land.
Nigel Quinn, CEO of Bibby Marine, highlighted: “The maritime sector faces many challenges in the coming energy transition… The innovative design of this vessel exemplifies the transformative potential of cleaner energy solutions.” For its part, Steve Estill, director at HSBC UK, said: “This project represents an important step forward in sustainable maritime technology.”
Beatrice Reguero, director of the state area at Cesce, added: “We are very proud to be part of this pioneering initiative… Collaboration between companies and countries is key to addressing global challenges.”
With this joint effort between international financial and technological institutions, the new vessel is expected to mark a significant milestone towards cleaner and more efficient maritime transport.
