Carmen González, director of the CEOE's Higher Institute of Business Studies (ISEE), tailor-made training for students

If you had to describe the training offered by the Higher Institute of Business Studies, what would you say are its main characteristics? And what path has the center followed since its creation?

Our Institute was founded in 1993 as the CEOE's training center, characterized by its cross-disciplinary approach to business management, offering courses primarily aimed at the business sector. However, our students may include business owners, university graduates seeking further education, or anyone interested in the subjects we offer, without any academic prerequisites.

Carmen González points out the difficulties that online training still entails, despite its advantages.

From the outset, the Higher Institute of Business Studies has believed in new training technologies. We were pioneers in offering training through interactive video discs, which have been successful in other countries, although not as satisfactorily in Spain. Nevertheless, they have allowed us to work with images. In this way, we conduct simulations based on real-world scenarios, using fictitious companies, which makes our courses eminently practical. In 1996, we launched our learning units on CD-ROM, with image quality equal to that of the video disc. In 1999, the CEOE (Spanish Confederation of Employers' Organizations), recognizing the genuine need for business training, reached an agreement with the UNED (National University of Distance Education) to recognize our courses, which are now fully accredited. Furthermore, the Institute created a virtual campus online where, in addition to the strictly academic sections, there is a cafeteria (i.e., a chat room), discussion forums, a library, and a leisure section.

We currently have 40 interactive CD-ROMs, each approximately 4 to 5 hours long, which combine video with text or theory and exercises. All of this is supplemented by printed materials provided to students on a CD-ROM.

"Through the virtual campus created by ISEE, students can know at any time where they are in the subject or track their progress."

– What kind of courses can you offer to users or interested parties?

We offer a Master's in Business Management, which covers all areas of business administration and management. This means the curriculum includes finance, costs, marketing, quality, pricing, and products, as well as other related and important areas such as the environment, occupational health and safety, human resources, and customer service. We also offer expert courses, where the areas are broken down into smaller, specialized sections. These include specific courses on costs, finance, quality management, or marketing, for example, to reinforce those business management topics where further training is needed.

– Among the services provided by ISEE are the Telematics Initiatives for Companies, undoubtedly of great use to them, what do they consist of?

When we designed the virtual campus we've been discussing, we decided to give it a name: ITEM, which stands for Telematic Initiatives for Business. This is because, in addition to training, there are other forums that provide a meeting point. Furthermore, there's a catalog of tools that allows users to create, for example, a marketing plan, simulating what might happen in their company. The system indicates their positioning within the sector, whether they're performing well or poorly, and so on. In short, a range of tools that complement the training we offer.

– We could say that, therefore, through the Higher Institute of Business Studies, students can find training tailored to their needs, is that correct?

Students can perfectly schedule their training in terms of time, although they will have the constant support of their tutor. We have indicated an estimated duration of effort for each course, but we are the only ones who offer the possibility for students to plan the length of the master's program or course in question. Students start when they want, work and organize themselves, and finish when they need to. Ultimately, it is individualized training.

– I'm sure many people are interested in this training option. An agreement was recently reached with Banesto to facilitate payment for these courses and the master's program. What does it entail?

Indeed, the agreement reached with Banesto allows us to offer a zero-interest financing system, meaning a deferred payment plan with no interest. However, I must mention that the prices set by the Institute are not at all expensive, but rather commensurate with the quality of our courses.
