Within the framework of the agri-food fair Origin Natura, celebrated in City of Real, Jose Manuel Caballero, second vice-president of the regional government, has announced that Castilla-La Mancha will request European institutions to adopt measures that guarantee equal conditions for local producers in the face of international competitors. Caballero stressed the importance of “protecting quality agri-food products” that the region exports and underlined the regional government’s commitment to a CAP that ensures both the profitability and sustainable development of the sector.
Caballero confirmed that a meeting has already been requested with Christopher Hansen, the new European Commissioner for Agriculture, where these demands will be raised. In his speech, he stressed the need for “mirror clauses” to guarantee competitive equality and defended the strategic role of the agri-food sector as “the pantry of Europe”.
He also addressed the potential impact of international protectionist policies on key products such as Spanish wine and Manchego cheese. Faced with these global challenges, Caballero urged the European Union to be firm in its trade defense.
The Vice-President also stressed that the upcoming CAP negotiations must focus on ensuring profitable farms from a strategic perspective. The challenges mentioned include generational change, fair incomes and opportunities arising from a low-carbon economy.
Finally, he praised the success of Origin Natura for its integrative approach between producers and the processing and innovative industry. This shared vision reinforces a collective development that is essential to confront an increasingly polarized world where “pressures are no longer just military but also food-related.”
