"These tariffs pose a serious threat to the survival of many small and medium-sized enterprises that, after a great effort in the previous crisis to internationalize, now see their export capacity and resilience put at risk," CEPYME said after the meeting.

Regarding the measures announced by the Spanish Government, CEPYME appreciated the "speed" in the approval of an aid package, but criticized its approach and amount.“The conditionality of aid such as furlough schemes reduces the effectiveness of the measures. SMEs need real support to adapt to the new scenario, redirect their sales, and ensure their viability, even if that means downsizing,” explained the employers' association. “The uncertainty surrounding the repayment of this aid discourages applications in such a volatile economic context.”
CEPYME also recalled the difficulties SMEs faced in accessing aid under the DANA (National Development Plan) due to conditionality, highlighting the vulnerability of smaller businesses in these types of situations.
While the Confederation considers «"essential" credit coverage to facilitate the exit of companies abroad, especially through mechanisms such as CESCE, insisted that the Spanish government will not be able to offset the full impact of US tariffs or the slowdown in the European economy.
"The focus should be on alleviating the burdens and costs that prevent SMEs from competing on a level playing field," CEPYME stated. "At a time of peak tax revenue, we are calling for immediate relief in the form of reduced labor costs, regulatory burdens, and other obligations that hinder the development of our businesses." The employers' association highlighted the sharp increase in labor costs, including social security contributions, in recent years.
