There is no doubt about the important role that a country's culture and language play in navigating the challenges of international business. In this respect, the Cervantes Institute has developed a brilliant track record that, in many cases, is not matched by Spanish business activity.
Learning to play the Spanish guitar in Tunisia, enjoying a flamenco festival in Rome, or attending a business Spanish course in New York are activities made possible thanks to the work carried out by the Cervantes Institute around the world.
The dissemination of the Spanish language and Hispanic-speaking culture is the main mission of the institution, which, with a public character and operating since 1991, has its headquarters in Alcalá de Henares, birthplace of the writer Miguel de Cervantes.
Its functions and activities are geared towards the organization and accreditation of Spanish language courses, as well as the dissemination of all types of cultural expressions, tasks carried out in collaboration with other Spanish and Latin American organizations and with entities in the host countries. The Cervantes Institute network extends across four continents through 40 centers, and by the end of this year or the beginning of next, another center will open in Beijing.
All of this is managed through cultural programs developed with a degree of autonomy by each center, which, together with Spanish language instruction and library and documentation services, form the educational foundation of the Institute. The cultural offerings cover a wide range of trends that have characterized different historical periods and provide citizens with high-quality and engaging resources.
This year, the Instituto Cervantes' calendar of activities celebrates and includes the centenaries of Pablo Neruda and Salvador Dalí, the dissemination of the paleontological discoveries of Atapuerca, the major international festivals of Spanish and Latin American cinema – New York, Toulouse, Chicago, Brussels – and the remembrance of the culture of exile.
Furthermore, the organization has been present since its inception at various language, education, and book fairs, considering them an ideal platform to publicize its objectives to a broad yet specialized audience.
More promotion
Supporting the promotional work of the Institute's network of centers are the Cervantes Classrooms. These are resource and self-study centers for Spanish, equipped with up-to-date bibliographic, audiovisual, and computer resources for independent language learning and the dissemination of Spanish culture. They are located in universities and other academic centers in various countries, providing students with access to the most advanced technological resources.
In each classroom there is a coordinating teacher who attends to Spanish students and all people interested in learning about Spanish culture.
Currently, there are Cervantes Classrooms in Sofia (Bulgaria), Prague (Czech Republic), Budapest (Hungary), Hanoi (Vietnam), Belgrade (Yugoslavia), and Zagreb (Croatia). A classroom will soon open in Jakarta (Idonesia). Their presence in these cities allows the institution's objectives to reach an even wider audience.
In this regard, the Network of Associated Centers of the Cervantes Institute, both in Spain and abroad, stands out, as they also contribute to the promotion of the teaching and use of the Spanish language in cities where there are no Cervantes Institute centers.
The internet is another tool that the institution makes available to everyone interested in Spanish language and culture, through the Cervantes Virtual Center (http://cvc.cervantes.es). The public can thus access all the cultural programming offered by the entity's network of centers, and consult resources on Spanish language and literature, and even register and participate in the activities offered by the Institute.
