With an eye on a greener logistics future, DHL, the giant of the sector, brought together today in the Spanish capital more than forty leaders and key representatives from the logistics, business and institutional fields in the first edition of its GoGreen SummitThis pioneering forum, jointly organized by the five divisions of the DHL Group in Spain (Express, Supply Chain, eCommerce, Global Forwarding and Freight), established itself as a crucial space for dialogue and collaboration under the motto "The path towards sustainable logistics".
The meeting focused on unraveling the challenges and vast opportunities presented by the decarbonization of transport and logistics, key sectors in the fight against climate change. Top-level experts addressed the main strategies for moving towards low-emission logistics, thoroughly exploring the innovation in transportation, the crucial role of sustainable fuels, the necessary electrification of fleets, the design of carbon-neutral infrastructure, and the digital transformation of operational processes. These levers were analyzed in their application to various fields such as urban mobility, sustainable aviation, maritime transport, long-distance transport, and logistics innovation in general.
In this context of climate urgency, DHL reaffirmed its ambitious global commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.The company presented concrete milestones on its roadmap toward sustainability, highlighting the significant reduction in its carbon footprint, which fell below 2024 million tons in 34. The company has set an even more ambitious goal of reducing its emissions to below 29 million tons by 2030.
Among the most notable advancements presented during the day, DHL announced that more than 40% of its global delivery fleet now operates without generating direct emissions. In addition, the company reported that 3,5% of its air transport already uses sustainable fuels, a percentage they hope to significantly increase in the coming years. Another important milestone is that all new DHL buildings will be carbon neutral by 2021, demonstrating a comprehensive commitment to sustainability across all its operations. Looking ahead, DHL has set a goal of 30% of the fuel used in its air transport to be sustainable by 2030, and that two-thirds of its delivery and collection vehicles will be emission-free by the same year.
At the national level, where DHL has a workforce of more than 10.000 employees, the various divisions have implemented far-reaching measures to boost sustainability in their operations:
- DHLExpress: Its GoGreen Plus service is already used by more than 10.000 companies, enabling them to reduce Scope 3 emissions in their supply chains. A significant 30% of air shipments in Spain are already carried out using this solution.
- DHL Freight: It has incorporated 31,75-meter duo vehicles powered by HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), a renewable fuel that allows for a reduction of up to 90% in emissions.
- DHL Global Forwarding: It is actively promoting sustainable shipping, covering the cost of the European Emission Trading System (ETS) tax to facilitate its customers' transition to greener options.
- DHL eCommerce: It has achieved a 15% improvement in the energy efficiency of its logistics centers in Madrid, Barcelona, and Lisbon thanks to the implementation of new automated sorting systems. Furthermore, 100% of the electricity consumption at these facilities comes from renewable energy sources.
- DHL Supply Chain: It has set the ambitious goal of achieving complete carbon neutrality in all its warehouses by 2025. The division already uses HVO on some of its transport routes and has implemented smart submeters to monitor and optimize energy consumption at its facilities. Furthermore, 85% of its workforce has been certified in sustainability training, underscoring the company's commitment to awareness and training in this area.
Miguel Borras, General Manager of DHL Express Spain, who acted as a representative of all DHL business units in the country, highlighted the importance of collaboration and support for customers in this decarbonization process: “We know that our customers are looking for ways to decarbonize their supply chains"We are committed to providing the best solutions for our customers, and we are here to support them in this important goal.
