Digital revolution in Spanish ports, connected data drives the new era of knowledge

 

The transition from data to knowledge has become a fundamental pillar for the future of Spanish ports. Jaime LuezasDuring his speech, he highlighted how this evolution allows for "smarter, evidence-based decisions, optimized and automated processes, promotion of innovation, improved customer experience, new business opportunities…".

 

"Moving from data to knowledge is fundamental for any organization linked to the port sector that wants to remain competitive in the digital age," Luezas stated, emphasizing that "we are witnessing a knowledge revolution based on recorded, connected, and digital data, which allows machines to work precisely and interconnectedly without human intervention."

 

The new UNE 178110 StandardDesigned to facilitate the transformation of ports into "smart ports," the initiative underscores the need for a cultural shift that prioritizes data over applications. "This requires an effort from all stakeholders," Luezas noted.

 

Luezas clarified the differences between digitizing, digitization, and digital transformation. “In the transition from analog to digital, we still encounter legislation that, despite the increasing implementation of one-stop shops, still includes paper-based procedures. The challenge lies not in converting to digital formats (digitizing), but in managing the volume of data. Digitization is something else entirely; it's about processing data and focusing on optimizing processes to achieve workflows that no longer require manual intervention.”

 

"Competitiveness lies in knowing how to generate knowledge from that data by combining it in the appropriate way," Luezas explained, regarding the selection and implementation of technologies.

 

According to Luezas, digital transformation focuses on data exchange and process automation, requiring "suitable profiles and producing a cultural change among the people who are part of the port community."

 

The data cycle and the European case:

 

According to Luezas, the data cycle begins with "sensorization, data emergence and aggregation," followed by "operational coordination between the port and logistics community," "integrated service offering," and finally, "synchromodality, smart contracts, and the connected port."

 

In the European context, Luezas highlighted the importance of "federative platforms" that promote interoperability and data exchange. He cited the SIMPLE system as a key example, where "each port is part of a much larger whole: the supply chain."

 

"These networks arise from a set of agreements and technical applications to enable data to flow between systems and be accessible to authorized users with a publish/subscribe approach. In other words, they are a constellation of many small, autonomous but interconnected and interoperable data spaces," Luezas explained.

 

Challenges and semantic standardization:

 

The main challenges identified include "obtaining data in a timely manner, trust in the data source, security, emerging regulations, standardization, and specialized talent."

 

Luezas concluded by emphasizing the need for "standardized semantics" and announced that Puertos del Estado is working on a standard to establish a "common language" for the Spanish port and logistics community.
