Dragados Group, through its construction company Dragados Obras y Proyectos (DOPSA), has contracted the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Public Works to build the Coral Highway in the eastern part of the Caribbean country for 127 million euros (more than 21.130 billion pesetas).
The Dragados Group will build more than 31 kilometers of highway along the Higuey-Verón stretch (La Altagracia province), as well as five major viaducts.
This contract joins the one for the new bridge over the Ozama River, also built by DOPSA in the Dominican Republic. This infrastructure, 180 meters high and 684 meters long, has become the first cable-stayed bridge in the Caribbean and will allow the passage of 180.000 vehicles daily after its inauguration on December 19th by the President of the Dominican Republic.
Since 2000, Dragados Servicios has managed the contract for municipal solid waste (MSW) collection and street cleaning in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, and since 2001 it has provided the same service in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros. The population served by these contracts is 1.600.000 people.
