Bert Van Rompuy began by discussing KBC Bank's presence in Eastern European countries, highlighting the bank's efforts to promote the internationalization of Spanish companies in the region, which he observes are increasingly interested in working with Eastern European countries. Having a team deployed in the region whose members speak the local languages and working with the parent company in each country to finance companies in the early stages of their internationalization are some of the key elements of the bank's strategy.
The introduction sparked a debate involving several attendees, including Ángel Díaz, a member of a business holding company in Slovakia, who explained that his work in that country focuses on acquiring bankrupt machinery companies in order to restructure and turn them around. José Terreros outlined some of the characteristics of the business and labor markets in some Eastern European countries, such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, and regarding business relocation, he asserted that "this doesn't catch anyone off guard; it's something that's been known for some time," pointing to the lower labor costs compared to Western European countries as one of the main causes, to which Luis García added political stability.
