Under pressure from the protests, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has once again "temporarily" postponed his plan to raise taxes on inheritances and capital gains on property.
The change in regulations stems from the urgent need to find new sources of revenue to limit the public deficit. But the unrest has deeper roots, in particular the opposition of a large part of the population to allowing Correa's re-election in 2017. Although the president remains one of the most popular in the region, his approval rating has fallen by 13 points, to 55%.
