Among the measures being considered is the possibility of prohibiting the re-export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) Russian to third countries. This is the first time that the UE puts this fuel in the spotlight.
Let us remember that, in 2023, around 16% of EU LNG imports came from Russia, purchases that have been of vital importance to cover European energy needs after the closure of three of the four gas pipelines that supplied the European bloc. In addition, European leaders are also considering imposing sanctions on Russian helium, which is increasingly used in advanced manufacturing. Another of the measures they discuss is the possibility of pprohibit Russian financing from media outlets or political groups.
The proposal responds to the succession of news and scandals about the disinformation campaigns orchestrated by Russia on the occasion of the European elections next June. Thus, the Commission's draft prohibits the broadcast and/or distribution of four media outlets that have a greater presence in the countries of Eastern Europe, among which, for example, the Czech media Voice of Europe stands out.
