Federal Express Corporation, one of the world's largest express transportation companies, has officially opened a new global air transit facility in the Istanbul Airport (IST)This long-term investment is a strategic step that places FedEx at the epicenter of a country that is consolidating itself as a global power in air cargo and as a key center for the cross-border e-commerce.
The facility, which came online in August 2025, strengthens the company's global network and underscores its commitment to international trade through advanced logistics infrastructure and cutting-edge technology. The opening ceremony was attended by key company executives, including Raj Subramaniam, President and CEO of FedEx Corporation; Richard W. Smith, International COO and CEO of FedEx Airlines, and Wouter Roels, President of FedEx Europe, among others.
“This new facility in Istanbul is a strategic move for FedEx, further integrating our global air and ground networks and providing the scale and flexibility our customers need in a dynamic business environment,” said Richard W. Smith. “It is also a key step in leveraging the power of our combined networks to generate long-term value in the global air cargo market.”
This new facility connects Türkiye with 30 weekly FedEx flights to and from key markets in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East, and provides capacity for future network expansions in the region.
Located at the intersection between Europe, Asia and Africa, Istanbul is uniquely positioned as a key logistics hub. It also integrates FedEx's global air network with its vast ground network, which connects 45 countries and handles 1,3 million shipments per week.
The 25.300-square-meter center consolidates critical operations such as air freight forwarding, customs clearance equipment, and administrative support into a single space. It features state-of-the-art technology such as an automated sortation system, high-speed security scanning, and the ability to handle dangerous goods. With three times the previous sorting throughput, the center can process up to 7.000 packages per hour, significantly improving volume management. Additionally, three high-speed automated X-ray machines, equipped with artificial intelligence, increase the speed, accuracy, and security of shipment inspection.
