Ferrovial will build seven buildings in France for the ITER project

Ferrovial Agroman, Ferrovial's construction subsidiary, has signed two contracts to design and build seven buildings in France for the ITER project, the world's largest experimental facility dedicated to researching the feasibility of fusion energy.


Ferrovial Agroman has signed two contracts with Fusion for Energy (F4E) for the design and construction of seven buildings of the ITER In the town of Cadarache, in the southeast of France.The agreements signed with F4E, the organization of the European Union which manages the European contribution to ITER, have an approximate value of 40 million euros and an estimated duration of four years.

This is the second collaboration that the Ferrovial subsidiary has signed with ITER: since January 2013, the consortium made up of Ferrovial Agroman, Vinci and Razel-Bec is responsible for the execution of the complex tokamak, the main building that will house the reactor, as well as the design and construction of nine auxiliary buildings.

[Img # 4243]With the first of the contracts, Ferrovial Agroman will build two buildings for the conversion of magnetic energy, each with a surface area of ​​4.900 mand a volume of 39.000 m3. These buildings will house the components manufactured in China, Russia and South Korea that will transform alternating current into direct current and supply electricity to the ITER magnets. In addition, the company will build a smaller building dedicated to reactive energy compensation, a process necessary for the operation of the power grid.

The second contract refers to the design and construction of the ITER cooling towers and hot and cold water tanks. These structures, which will have a capacity comparable to that of ten Olympic swimming pools, about 26.000 m3 In total, they will store the water intended to cool the ITER. As part of the agreement, Ferrovial Agroman will also build a series of buildings dedicated to cooling systems or water treatment, among other functions.

In total, the 42 hectares covered by the ITER complex will house 39 buildings. Currently about 300 people work directly in the construction of the project and it is expected that by mid-2015 there will be 2.000 employees. According to the director of F4E, the Professor Henrik Bindslev, “the construction of ITER is reaching its turning point: more and more companies are participating, and more and more workers are developing one of the most important works in Europe".

ITER is a global collaboration, the first of its kind, in the field of energy. It will be the largest facility on the planet for experimental fusion, designed to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy. Fusion energy research aims to develop a safe, unlimited and environmentally responsible energy source. Europe will contribute almost half of the cost of its construction, while the other six members of this international association (China, Japan, India, South Korea, Russia and the USA.), will contribute equally.
