Gamesa, the Basque company that manufactures products for the aerospace and renewable energy sectors, could become the global supplier of blades for Boeing's Apache helicopters, according to a preliminary agreement recently signed between the two companies. The contract, worth between $30 and $45 million annually for a period of ten years, would involve the production of 5.000 blades.
The processing of the agreement is at a fairly advanced stage, although the final decision is not in the hands of Gamesa or Boeing, but of the Spanish Government, which must make a final determination for the acquisition of the "Apache" helicopters, a procedure that could have already begun with the request to contract six units under the leasing system.
If Gamesa is ultimately awarded the project, the factory located in Ourense will begin producing the blades in 2005. Specifically, in the first phase, approximately 4.000 propellers would be produced to replace those on the thousand or so aircraft currently in use worldwide. Subsequently, another 1.200 would be manufactured for the 300 new units planned for production. Furthermore, the factory would become a full-service supplier, also handling the manufacture of spare blades, which could number over 1.000.
