Gemalto, the world leader in digital security, announces that the vehicle registration and driving license issuing authority of Quebec, SAAQ, has declared the start of operations of Gemalto's new centralised driving licence issuing site. Gemalto's professional services team worked closely with this authority for eight months to integrate the centralised issuing solution at the SAAQ headquarters.
The multi-year contract with the SAAQ, in addition to offering the issuance solution Coesys for centralized issuance, also includes custom design work and polycarbonate-based driver's licenses, known for supporting strong tactile security features. Gemalto's team of security experts addressed the complexity of retaining the design of the driver's licenses during the transition from the previous license, made with Teslin®, a synthetic material, to the polycarbonate format. Polycarbonate technology adds security enhancements to the document without increasing waiting times when Quebec drivers renew or apply for their driver's licence.
The first licenses were issued to Quebec drivers on September 9, 2015.
The change to the new polycarbonate driving licenses offers two advantages: drivers of Quebec They will enjoy a more secure identification format as well as a longer license duration, reducing frequent issuance costs, thus being more convenient for citizens.
“Thanks to the flexibility of our driver’s license solution, it was easy to incorporate the various types of licenses that the SAAQ supported into its existing system. The new production center integrates all of the SAAQ’s driver’s license issuance programs and includes the new polycarbonate driver’s license,” he stated. Neville PattinsonGemalto's senior vice president of Government Programs for North America said, "Gemalto employees operate the solution within the SAAQ and ensure that we meet the service level agreement established by the SAAQ."
