Iberdrola promotes the electrification of offshore wind power in the United Kingdom

 

An innovative study, carried out in collaboration with Maersk Stillstrom, reveals the technical and economic feasibility of using battery-powered service vessels, recharged directly by wind turbines. This project marks a milestone in the search for sustainable solutions for the maintenance and operation of offshore energy infrastructures.

 

The offshore wind industry is at a turning point. The growing need to reduce emissions is carbon emissions has driven leading companies such as Iberdrola to seek innovative solutions for their operations. In this context, the electrification of service vessels (E-SOV) emerges as a promising alternative.

 

The study carried out by ScottishPower Renewables and Maersk's Stillstrom The paper analyses in detail the feasibility of using E-SOVs in offshore wind farms. These vessels, designed to carry out maintenance and repair tasks, often remain at sea for extended periods, making them ideal candidates for electrification.
