Iberia considers the restrictions imposed by Washington on the alliance between British Airways and American Airlines (which would require them to cede some of their flight rights on transatlantic routes) to be unjustifiable. According to statements made to Reuters by the company's CEO, Angel Mullor: "The restrictions seem unjustifiable, considering the alliances of other European companies. I believe it is discriminatory treatment, probably driven by other interests."
Iberia is a member, along with British Airways, American Airlines, and other airlines, of the OneWorld alliance. Other European competitors, such as Lufthansa and Air France, enjoy antitrust immunity on their transatlantic route alliances with their partners United Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
Mullor pointed out that although Iberia has not been individually affected by the transatlantic agreement between British and American Airlines, excessive restrictions "would force a rethink of the agreements within OneWorld." However, Mullor is confident that the terms for the alliance will change. "I am hopeful that they will change that decision," he commented regarding the restrictions imposed by the US government. "If not, they will soon have to reconsider the OneWorld agreements."
