The company will deploy its intelligent vessel traffic control system in the ports of Santos and Vitoria
Indra has been awarded two contracts to implement its vessel traffic control systems, known as VTMIS (Vessel Traffic Management Information System), in the Brazilian portss of Vitoria and Santos for a total amount of 54 million reales or approximately 18 M€.
The first of these has been awarded by Companhia Docas do Espírito Santo (Codesa), the public body responsible for the administration of the port of Vitoria (Estpírito Santo), for an amount of R$ 22,9 million. This solution will enter into service in 2015.
Regarding the second of these, Companhia Docas do Estado de São Paulo (CODESP), the company that manages the port of Santos (Sao Paulo), the leading port in South America in terms of cargo volume, awarded the contract to Indra for R$31 million and a term of execution that will extend until 2016.
The solution that Indra will implement in both ports will contribute to improve navigation safety and to increase the efficiency of port activities and operations. It will allow for monitoring and management in real time and in an integrated operational scenario of vessel traffic, port operations and knowledge of the environmental situation in the area.
This system is capable of effectively managing complex situations arising from intense maritime traffic or the transit of dangerous goods. It also reinforces the safety in adverse environmental conditions and environmental risk situations as well as the control of restricted areas for the navigation.

The ports of Santos and Vitoria will have the Indra VTMIS iMare system, which will provide operators with a integrated maritime scenario, based on digital and standardized nautical charts. The system has tools that facilitate the safe management and organization of the maritime traffic and is integrated with other management systems that streamline administrative operations within the concept of a 'paperless port'. The operator will have each vessel perfectly identified on the screen in his working position, knowing its exact location, load and route. This position also integrates the communications system that facilitates the exchange of instructions with the vessels.
El work It is controlled, operated and managed from a coordination centre that receives data obtained from a series of sensors. In the specific case of the ports of Santos and Vitoria, it is built around a number of distributed radar systems to monitor the movements of vessels throughout the port and its surrounding waters.
In addition, the system is equipped with a set of base stations, repeaters and AIS (Automatic Identification System) receivers that complement the data obtained by the radars with identification information emitted by the vessels themselves. This insights This will be verified by using electro-optical systems capable of detecting vessels in day and night conditions.
In addition, the system will be equipped with a series of environmental sensors, which provide data on meteorological and climatological conditions, and hydrographic sensors, which will provide information on aspects relating to the tides and currents in the area.
The iMare system will combine all the information provided by radars, the automatic vessel positioning system (AIS system), the digital distress call system (DSC system), and the meteorological and tide stations. It will also have access to and control capacity for the various cameras deployed, which allow for a visual check of the information.
