In January 2004, industrial production in Ukraine increased by 7,5% compared to the same month of the previous year, while in December 2003, this figure fell by 6,4%, according to the Statistics Committee. The electricity sector experienced a decrease of 1,6% compared to the same period of the previous year, but production increased by 2,2% compared to the previous December. The fuel industry grew by 8,2% compared to January 2003 and registered a slight decrease (0,3%) compared to December of the previous year. Steel production increased by 8,2%, but decreased by 1,5% compared to December 2003. Non-ferrous metallurgy suffered a decrease of 2,7% compared to the same month of 2003 and of 4,8% compared to December of the previous year. In January 2004, electricity generation fell by 0,9%, to 91,3 billion kilowatt-hours.
