Interview with Balbino Prieto, President of the Exporters Club: Association brings many advantages to international business

– The Exporters Club is a meeting forum where business experiences are exchanged. What are usually the most discussed topics?

The most common topics in the meetings held at the Exporters Club are financial instruments to support internationalization, International Financial Institutions (IFIs), the different destination markets for Spanish exports, the image of Spain as an exporting country and, in short, everything that directly affects the international activity of our members.

– You participated in Exporta with a workshop that discussed the advantages of association for the international activity of companies, what are these advantages?

Being part of an association provides an exporting company with a number of added values that it cannot obtain on its own. Among them, I would highlight a few:

• Formation of consortia with other companies and implementation of joint projects, with the sharing of risks and costs that this entails;

• exchange of business experiences, being able to benefit from the knowledge that other companies have about a particular market;

• Sharing of problems and concerns, and joint search for solutions;

• contact with the administration;

• contact with similar associations in other countries;

• geographical and resource complementarity.

"Our priority at the moment is the implementation of the collaboration agreement with MBDA."

– Among the many activities they organize is the development of an Emerging Markets Confidence Index, which they carry out in collaboration with the Spanish Center for International Relations. What does it consist of?

The objective of this Index, which is updated semi-annually and of which we presented the third edition in April, is to establish an assessment of the main geographical areas and emerging countries of the world from the point of view of their economic and commercial interest for Spain, due to the possible interest it may have for both foreign economic policy and the strategy of companies.

The Index is compiled through a survey conducted periodically among executives of the Club's member companies, in which they assess the main emerging markets (Latin America, Maghreb, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, Asia, Eastern Europe and CIS), taking into account a series of variables:

• Market potential (size of the economy, growth prospects and its impact on economic relations with the rest of the world, prospects for balance of payments solvency and prospects for political stability)

• Political importance for Spain

• And the potential of the Spanish offer.

– What other projects can you highlight in relation to the future plans that the Exporters Club has in mind?

At this time, our most important priority is the implementation of the collaboration agreement we just signed with the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce. This agreement can open the door to that market for thousands of Spanish companies, through the creation of Hispanic-American consortiums between MBDA member companies and Spanish companies.
