Mediterranean ports are committed to a green transition without losing competitiveness

The Port of Algeciras has hosted the International Seminar: Green Transition for Maritime Transport, bringing together almost a hundred experts and main actors in the sector

The participants in this Seminar come from Mediterranean ports on both shores such as Valencia, Barcelona, ​​Marseille, Tangier Med, Port Said or Malta, among others. At the event, organized by the Algeciras Bay Port Authority (APBA) and MedPorts Association, all have shown the importance and commitment to minimizing their environmental impact and continuing to take steps to accelerate the reduction of the carbon footprint of maritime transport - the most efficient from an environmental point of view per ton of merchandise transported - without seeing their competitiveness diminished. .

The round tables, moderated by the Secretary General of MedPorts, Philippe Guillaumet, have focused on the regulatory frameworks in force and in process, such as the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), or the initiatives of ports and shipping companies to help stop climate change: OPS, alternative fuels, scale optimization, etc., and as the participants have agreed, requires the collaboration and commitment of everyone to achieve a decarbonization that IMO wants to achieve in 2050, as the president of the IMO Council has detailed, Víctor Jiménez. For his part, the president of State Ports (OPPE), Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena, has highlighted the role of Algeciras as the spearhead of the energy transition.

The president of the Port Authority of Algeciras (APBA), Gerardo Landaluce, highlighted that “we are all aware of the vital importance of climate change and hence the need to establish initiatives that allow sustainable projects to be carried out from all points of view: economic, social and environmental, which allow us to contribute to well-being. of current and future generations.” In the specific case of Summer, has added landaluce, “it is essential to find formulas for effective reduction of CO2 emissions, instead of exporting them to our neighboring countries, while promoting the creation of CO2 tax havens.” As the host has insisted, technical meetings such as the one held today encourage the creation of a common consciousness, also agreeing with many of the speakers to stop “demonizing” maritime transport, responsible for 80% of global trade.

The ports of Algeciras and Tangier Med, with the intervention of its general directors, José Luis Hormaechea and Hassan Abkari, respectively, have advanced that they work hand in hand with the operators to incorporate new features in the Strait maritime route. Currently the line Algeciras-Tangier Med It absorbs more than 400.000 trucks per year and the forecast is that it will reach 550.000 units in 2025. These innovations are aimed at optimizing the line from a commercial and, above all, environmental point of view.
