The minister louis planes has chaired the Advisory Council on Agricultural and Fisheries Policy, where he presented to the regional councillors the Spanish priorities for the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union. This presidency, which began on January 1, will focus on the debate on the new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFP) and its continuity until the Danish presidency in the second half.
Planas stressed that Spain will insist that the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) post 2027 has sufficient funding to face future challenges. Although the MFF is not expected to be presented until June, Spain is already working on a coordinated position. According to Planas, "The Polish presidency aims to focus the work of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council on measures necessary to improve the competitiveness of the agricultural sector and increase their resilience to crises.”
In addition, trade issues recurring in the Agriculture Councils were discussed during the meeting. A report on the status of the agreement with the Mercosur and its modification with Mexico. Planas highlighted the opportunities offered by the agreement with Mercosur to the European agri-food sector, especially the Spanish one, due to the progressive elimination of tariffs on products such as olive oil and wine.

Regarding fishing, Spain will present a proposal to reform the regulations of the Multiannual Plan for the Western MediterraneanThe proposal seeks to limit drastic reductions and increases in fishing days and allow multi-year flexibility in Total Allowable Catches (TACs) and quotas.
Finally, Planas explained that the European Commission is expected to present two regulatory proposals: one on unfair cross-border commercial practices and another on the modification of the CMO to strengthen farmers. The Spanish law will serve as a key reference for these regulations.
