Despite the uncertainty surrounding the Figueruelas plant, Opel Spain has managed to stay at the top and overcome even the toughest times. With over 300.000 units exported, it will begin manufacturing its new minivan in January.
The intensification of international relations is a feature of the growing development of contemporary economies, and one indicator of their evolution is the degree of openness, or the ratio between the sum of trade flows and GDP. This indicator has continued to grow in Aragon, with the foreign trade flow generated by General Motors playing a particularly prominent role. In the late 80s, it accounted for around 70% of Aragonese exports and more than 40% of imports. These are the words of José A. Biescas Ferrer, Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Zaragoza, who highlighted the significant impact a single company can have on the economy of an entire region.

Opel Spain is not going through one of its best periods; however, the figures are optimistic, as its sales volume reached €5.180 billion last year. The Figueruelas plant is celebrating its twentieth anniversary, with its sights set on the new minivan that it will begin manufacturing in January, the new Meriva, which is already being produced at the plant in Brazil. The European market is the main destination for Opel Spain's exports, although the Americas are strongly vying to gain ground. In fact, as we mentioned, the new Chevrolet—the brand under which the new vehicle is marketed at the Brazilian plant—has already sold more than 1.800 units.
