INSTITUTIONAL AND BUSINESS MEETING IN NORTH AMERICA
The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Administration presented to Mexican and Spanish companies the national competitive potential, based on the development of renewable energies, a leading hyperconnectivity in Europe and the growing weight of the digital economy , which already accounts for 27% of GDP.
The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Administration, Óscar López, used his official trip to Mexico to act as a catalyst for international investment in Spain. During a high-level meeting at the Spanish Embassy residence in Mexico City, the minister highlighted the "great economic moment" the Spanish economy is experiencing before some fifteen executives from leading technology companies.
At this forum, which was attended by nine Spanish companies (Veridas, Satlantis, Ikusi, Hiberus, Indra-Minsait, CAMESCOM-Seguridata, Cámara Española, Teknei and Hispasat) and six Mexican companies (Alestra/Axtel, IDS Comercial, Incode, AMITI, Softtek and Itaca Films), López sent a message of confidence to transatlantic investors: "Spain offers the best conditions for investment . "
Keys to competitiveness: Energy and Connectivity
During his speech, the government representative outlined the factors that explain the strong appetite of foreign capital for the Spanish market. Among them, he highlighted the abundance of clean and competitive energy , the result of a firm strategic commitment to renewable energy generation infrastructure.
This factor is complemented by an undisputed leadership in telecommunications . The figures presented confirm 5G network coverage reaching 99% of the national population, while fiber optic connectivity already reaches 95% of homes, representing a key competitive advantage for digital businesses.
“Spain now also exports technology ,” the minister emphasized, noting that the national production model has transcended its traditional global strengths, such as tourism and civil infrastructure. The sector's maturity is evident: by the end of 2025, the impact of the digital economy accounted for 27% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), mobilizing resources with a total value exceeding €455.000 billion.
Bilateral agreements: AI, supercomputing and cybersecurity
López's official agenda in Mexico also included significant bilateral summits on political and economic issues. In his meeting with Raquel Buenrostro, Mexico's Secretary of Public Administration, they discussed the recent Action Plans for Democracy and Spain's fraud prevention strategy, which has already blocked more than 300 million malicious phone and SMS communications. Both ministries also agreed to strengthen institutional cooperation through their respective public administration institutes.
Furthermore, the meeting with the Secretary of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, Rosaura Ruiz, served to strengthen alliances in the field of R&D&I . Both leaders assessed the progress of the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the protocols signed by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) . These strategic agreements aim to integrate Latin America's supercomputing capacity into the European ecosystem ( EuroHPC ) and foster the joint development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) under parameters of sovereignty and reliability for public services.
These themes will be the core of the debates at the upcoming Ibero-American Digital Forum , which will be held in Madrid in early November and will address critical issues such as cybersecurity, digital rights, and administrative modernization.
Social and cultural commitment
Beyond the purely economic and institutional agenda, the minister's Mexican tour included a visit to corporate social responsibility projects undertaken by Spanish companies. He toured the 'United Arab Republic' school, a center implementing the ProFuturo program (promoted by the Telefónica Foundation and the La Caixa Foundation) designed to combat the digital divide in vulnerable communities. Finally, he visited the National Museum of Anthropology of Mexico, an institution recently awarded the 2025 Princess of Asturias Award for Concord.
