Poland assumes EU Council Presidency with focus on European security

 

From the January 1 on 2025, Poland to take over rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union until June 30 of that same year. Under the slogan "Security, Europe!", this presidency will focus on strengthening seven key dimensions which are essential to ensuring robust and sustainable security across Europe. These dimensions include: defense and security, which will seek to strengthen existing mechanisms to respond to external threats; Protection of people and borders, ensuring that European citizens are protected against potential migration crises or attacks; resistance to foreign interference and disinformation, a critical challenge in times where fake news can undermine democracies; Guarantee of security and business freedom, promoting a stable economic environment that benefits both businesses and consumers; energy transition, crucial to reducing external energy dependencies; a competitive and resilient agricultural sector that guarantees food supply within the continent; and finally, health security, especially relevant after the ravages caused by recent pandemics.

 

Adam Szłapka, Polish Minister for European Union Affairs, stressed the relevance of this period, stating: "Europe is grappling with the consequences of Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine, heightened geopolitical tensions, and hybrid attacks against our democracy. In this context, the priority is to ensure the security of our citizens and the region." This presidential semester coincides with a critical moment for the EU. Internal challenges include economic issues arising from the post-pandemic shock as well as debates on migration policies.
