In an effort to strengthen the food industry, Banco Santander has allocated 5.300 billion euros in financing during 2024, which represents an increase of 23% compared to the previous year. This increase responds to the growing demand from companies in the sector to improve their investments in R&D&I, including the acquisition of advanced machinery equipped with GPS and sensors to optimize water use and better adapt to climate change.
The most requested loans have been those for the purchase and transformation of farms into high-value crops such as olive groves, almond trees, kiwi, pistachio trees and avocados. In addition, short-term loans, advances on subsidies and financing for inputs have been highly demanded by the more than 425.000 clients who have Santander has in this sector.
Last year, Santander signed an agreement with atitlan to create Atgro, a global platform dedicated to agricultural projects that began with an initial joint investment of 250 million euros. This alliance reflects a firm commitment to a more scalable and sustainable agricultural model in the face of challenges such as climate change and demographic changes.
During 2024, Santander has actively participated in key events in the agri-food sector such as Fruit Attraction in Madrid or Alimentaria in Barcelona, among others. These participations seek to bring the latest trends and technological innovations to entrepreneurs in the sector.
The bank has also remodeled its specialized offices in Agro Business, now with 125 branches dedicated exclusively to serving the specific needs of farmers and ranchers through trained specialists.
This strategy reaffirms Banco Santander's commitment to the sustainable and competitive development of the Spanish agri-food sector in the face of current and future challenges.
