About the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives (NFFC)

The National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives (NFFC) is the central institution that coordinates South Korea's fishing industry. Founded with the mission of protecting fishers' rights and ensuring sustainable development, the federation acts as an umbrella organization for 91 regional cooperatives. Its work ranges from supporting distribution and marketing to providing financial services and promoting internationally under the K-Fish brand.

Kim Kiseong serves as CEO of the NFFC. With a strong background in marine resource management, he leads the internationalization strategy for Korean products in Western markets. His focus is on supply chain digitalization, smart aquaculture, and establishing direct trade links with key logistics hubs in Europe.

Interview with Kim Kiseong, CEO of the NFFC

What do you expect from your participation in Seafood Expo Global after last year's positive results?

Kim Kiseong: Last year we achieved significant results in identifying European partners with whom to build long-term cooperation. Since the opening of the NFFC Paris Trade Support Center in 2024, exchanges with European markets, including Spain, have become even more active. Building on this foundation, we hope to showcase the quality and potential of Korean seafood products to a wider audience in Barcelona and develop concrete business opportunities with Spanish companies.

What does the Korean fishing industry offer Spanish companies in terms of collaboration, species, and products?

KK: Spanish cuisine is said to be a perfect match for the Korean palate; both countries share a culture centered on the sea and balanced diets. Our strengths lie in world-renowned aquaculture technology, advanced quality control systems, environmentally friendly packaging processes, and unique traditions such as fermentation and aging. These elements create distinctive products that perfectly complement Spanish gastronomy.

Does the Korean fishing industry consider Spain a strategic country for increasing its activity?

KK: Absolutely. In terms of export volume, Spain is already one of the largest destinations for Korean fish and seafood in Europe. This demonstrates the compatibility of our products with a market that has high consumption and a deep appreciation for quality. Furthermore, this year we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean fishing community's settlement in Las Palmas, which reinforces Spain not only as an important customer but also as a long-term strategic partner.

How is Korea addressing sustainability and the growing demand for healthy food?

KK: We recognize that the demand for healthy food must go hand in hand with sustainability. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has announced a comprehensive plan to address environmental changes such as rising sea temperatures. Key measures include science-based resource management through Total Allowable Catch (TAC) systems, the use of AI for fishing ground prediction, and transparent traceability through catch certifications. These initiatives ensure a stable supply and meet global ESG expectations.

How important is innovation in differentiating oneself from other markets?

KK: Innovation is no longer optional; it's essential. Faced with challenges like climate change and resource depletion, Korea is actively promoting smart aquaculture, HMR (high-demand meal) seafood products, and innovations in cold chain logistics. Our goal is to move beyond exporting raw materials and develop a premium seafood industry that strengthens our competitiveness in advanced markets like Spain.

What "hidden gems" of K-Fish can Korea offer to Spanish consumers and restaurants?

KK: We represent a high-value culinary culture. In addition to premium ingredients such as gim (seaweed), abalone, and sea cucumber, we offer a wide range of seasoned products and easy-to-enjoy HMR solutions. Korean fermentation and seasoning techniques have great potential to create new gastronomic experiences when combined with Spanish cuisine, making them especially attractive to the restaurant industry.

Do you think that new generations will maintain the high consumption of fish, influenced by social media and healthy trends?

KK: Although consumption patterns are changing, interest in health and sustainability is growing among young people. Fish aligns perfectly with these trends. The key is how it's consumed. Social media, cooking shows, and influencers play a vital role in presenting fish in a more accessible, modern, and visually appealing way. Korea is adapting by offering products that emphasize convenience and storytelling to connect with younger consumers in Spain.

Variety and Productive Regions

The offer led by Kim Kiseong is based on a privileged geography and regional specialization:

  • Gyeongsang Region: Historic center for commerce and fishing.
  • Jeolla Region: Fundamental base for the cultivation of Gymnocalycium and abalone.
  • Technological innovation: Eco-sustainable packaging processes and advanced quality control.
