The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albares, has met in Madrid with his counterpart from North Macedonia, Timco Mucunski, within the framework of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This visit, the first that Mucunski has made to a European country since his appointment in June, has allowed both countries to intensify their ties in various strategic areas.
During the meeting, the ministers reviewed the bilateral agenda, highlighting the strengthening of economic ties and the promotion of Spanish culture and language in North Macedonia. They also discussed key international issues such as the war in Ukraine and collaboration in multilateral forums such as the NATO, OSCE and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).
One of the most relevant issues was Spain's support for the North Macedonia's accession process to the European Union. Albares recalled that "Spain firmly supports Macedonia's commitment to its reform agenda," as reflected in the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of continuing to work on the EU enlargement, a priority issue during the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Mucunski's visit reinforces a relationship that has seen high-level meetings in recent years, including two visits by Albares to Skopje in 2023.
