Spain calls for open markets and diversification at EU trade and industry ministers' meeting

The Secretary of State for Commerce, Amparo López Senovilla, together with the Secretary of State for Industry, Rebecca Torro, and the EU Secretary of State, Fernando Sampedro, represented Spain at the recent joint informal meeting of Competitiveness and Trade Ministers in Warsaw. This meeting marked a milestone by bringing together representatives of both sectors for the first time with the aim of aligning the trade and industrial policies of the European Union to strengthen its global position.

During the meeting, key issues were addressed such as the linkage of commercial and industrial policies to improve the resilience of community market, strengthen economic security and move towards sustainability. The importance of greater integration in the internal market value chains of the EU candidate countries, as well as the strengthening of transatlantic relations.

Spain, in its speech, defended the need to continue investing in open markets and diversification, crucial elements to maintain competitiveness. In this regard, it was stressed that the European Union must ensure that European companies compete on a level playing field in the global market.

This meeting is taking place in a global context where competitiveness has become a critical factor. European Commission, in response to this challenge, recently introduced 'The Compass of Competitiveness', a comprehensive strategy aimed at boosting the European economy. In the trade area, this strategy focuses on market diversification, reducing critical dependencies and strengthening supply chains, seeking a more resilient European Union prepared for the challenges of the 21st century.
