Spain defends EU Fisheries Agreements as a pillar of sustainability and competitiveness

This was stated Ramón de la Figuera, Director General of Sustainable Fisheries, during his speech at the sixth annual meeting of the National Association of Cephalopod Fishing Freezer Vessel Owners (Anacef). The event, held in Africa House Under the motto "Biological component and biodiversity in the fisheries of the Producer Organization (OP) Anacef", it brought together a large representation of institutions, scientists, experts and professionals from the fishing sector.

The meeting focused on the management of fisheries by the Community and Spanish fleet, particularly in the context of fishing agreements with countries of West Africa and in the international waters of the Southwest Atlantic. During the discussions, the urgent need for decisions on sustainable fisheries management to be based on scientific knowledge was underscored. This is a line of action that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has consistently maintained over the years.

In this sense, the General Secretariat of Fisheries, in collaboration with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, has been promoting campaigns and research projects for decades. These initiatives are aimed at monitoring fisheries, studying their impact on marine ecosystems, and protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems.

Cooperation agreements for sustainable fishing are a fundamental pillar of the fisheries foreign policy of the European Union. They allow the EU fleet to operate in third-country waters with full legal certainty, exploiting surplus resources and helping to maintain a competitive and sustainable Spanish fleet. The EU currently has 12 agreements with protocols in force, including the one Sao Tome and Principe, which are expected to enter into force in the coming weeks. Of these, six correspond to West African nations. Additionally, there are nine "dormant" agreements without an active protocol.
