As part of the press breakfast "Automotive Technologies 'Made in Spain'. Path to Strategic Autonomy", organized by the Automotive and Mobility Technology Platform – Move2Future (M2F), advances in this crucial field for the automotive industry have been highlighted.

The meeting, which included the participation of experts from SERNAUTO, Gestamp, Tecnalia and Ceit, has addressed the challenges and trends that are influencing the development of the structural components of vehicles, such as electrification, circularity, safety and new mobility models.

In response to these challenges, the Spanish industry is betting on lightening structures, improving performance for safety reasons and increasing sustainability, both in the product and in the process, all in a competitive manner.

Ecodesign has become a fundamental element in the development of new structures. Minimizing the environmental impact throughout the product life cycle, from the design phase to its end of life, is a priority for the sector.

In this sense, new sustainable materials are being used such as high resistance steels, biobased materials, polymers and recycled aluminum. The application of these materials is facilitated by multiphysics simulation tools, which allow predicting the behavior of the material and optimizing its use.

Spain has a solid innovation ecosystem in the field of vehicle structures

Innovative manufacturing processes

The manufacturing of structures for vehicles of the future is also undergoing a profound transformation. New innovative manufacturing techniques and technologies are being implemented, such as the hybridization of different joining and assembly technologies, such as adhesives, laser joints, friction welding, etc.

Flexibility and traceability

The greater customization of vehicles requires shorter production runs. Therefore, the flexibility of processes is essential. In addition, standards and traceability controls such as the Digital Passport are being developed to guarantee the quality and safety of the components.

Impact on competitiveness and society

The commitment to lighter, safer and more sustainable structures will have a positive impact on the competitiveness of the Spanish automotive sector. In addition, it will contribute to the mitigation of the consequences in the event of an accident and will promote research and innovation in the country.

Spain has a solid innovation ecosystem in the field of vehicle structures. Spanish companies and technology centers are developing innovative solutions that position our country as a benchmark in this field.

To continue progressing along this path, it is necessary to accelerate the R&D&I process, have a national strategy that incentivizes technology and public-private collaboration, and attract investment. Only in this way can we guarantee that the "Spain Brand" continues to shine brightly in the vehicle of the future.
