Within the framework of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) 2025, held in Madrid, Spain has reaffirmed its position as a global leader in sustainable tourism. The Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu, stressed the importance of the country as a model to follow for its modernization and quality of tourism. “Spain is a reference for the entire international tourism industry,” said Hereu during his speech.
The event was attended by the minister, who inaugurated the fair together with the King and Queen and accompanied the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, during the closing ceremony. Hereu highlighted that 2024 closed with historic figures, reaching a tourist expenditure of 126 billion euros and receiving 94 million international tourists.
During FITUR, Hereu held meetings with delegations from emerging countries such as Egypt, Mexico and IranThese meetings seek to promote the exchange of experiences and public policies with emerging markets that represent key opportunities for Spain.
In addition, it was announced that Turespaña will celebrate its fortieth anniversary with a major event in Valencia to support the sector after the damage caused by the DANA. In line with this, Hereu presented a new international advertising campaign aimed at promoting Valencia as a tourist destination.
The commitment to sustainability was central to FITUR 2025. The Turespaña stand reflected this philosophy through initiatives focused on improving the quality of tourism employment and promoting innovation and digitalization of the sector. These actions are supported by significant public investments within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
With optimistic prospects for the first quarter of 2025, the Spanish Government continues to work to extend the benefits of tourism throughout its geography. Collaboration between the public and private sectors is essential to maintain Spain as the undisputed leader in sustainable tourism.
