UPS recently presented the 13th edition of its UPS Europe Business Monitor survey of business leaders, which investigates the economic situation and various aspects of European business. In this edition – and for the second year in a row – Spanish business leaders are the most optimistic in Europe regarding the economic recovery.
In this survey, 53% of Spanish business leaders consulted believe their companies' financial position has improved in the last year, compared to an average of 40% in Europe. Conversely, 13% reported a decline, resulting in a net difference (the difference – positive or negative – between those selecting the best and worst response) of +40%, the highest difference of all the countries surveyed.
Along with Spain, British business owners have shown the best performance over the past year. 51% of British respondents reported positive results for their companies. Conversely, the French and Dutch were more pessimistic, with 36% and 33% of respondents, respectively, stating that their businesses had worsened in the past year (compared to 26% in both countries who reported improvements).
The most marked change is in Belgium, where the 2001 survey showed a net difference of -20%. Two years later, the net difference is now +20%, with 41% of Belgian business owners believing their economic situation has improved over the past 12 months.
The least optimistic among the surveyed countries are in France, where managers who believe the situation will be the same as a year ago (45%) and those who believe it will worsen (9%) outnumber those who believe it will improve (only 42%), placing them far from the data of the other countries.
In the UPS survey, one of the questions with the highest level of consensus concerns the country that will show the strongest and most stable economic growth over the next three years. 53% of the European business leaders surveyed believe that Spain will be the country with the strongest economic growth during this period. Spain is precisely the country that gives the most votes to this option: 74% of Spanish respondents believe that our country will show the greatest growth. France and Italy are the next countries that most strongly believe in Spanish growth, with 62% and 61%, respectively.
