During the first three quarters of 2002, 1.404 companies with Spanish share capital were registered in the Mexican market, representing 5,5% of all companies with foreign direct investment (FDI) registered in Mexico (25.451). These companies are engaged in activities in the service sector (39,7% of the total), primarily banking and tourism, and in the manufacturing industry (26,4%), specifically automotive and metalworking. They are mostly located in Mexico City, the State of Mexico, and Quintana Roo.
Between January 1999 and September 2002, companies with Spanish capital invested $3.598.400, representing 5.9% of the total FDI entering the country during this period ($61.086.500) and 32,6% of the investment contributed by European Union countries ($11.044.300). This placed Spain second among European Union countries investing in Mexico during those years.
