The enormous structure, which weighs 3.700 tons and stands 59 meters tall, now rests firmly on the seabed 69 kilometers off the coast of Suffolk, England.
The complex installation operation was carried out by the SSCV Sleipnir, the world's largest crane vessel, operated by Heerema Marine Contractors. The structure departed from the shipyard in Aker Solutions in Verdal, Norway, to be precisely placed at a depth of 36 meters.
With a capacity of 1,4 GW, the project East Anglia THREE, led by Iberdrola Group, is projected to be the company's largest offshore wind farm and one of the largest globally. It is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2026 and is expected to generate clean energy to power more than one million homes.
Pedro Fernandez, project director at ScottishPower Renewables, Iberdrola's subsidiary in the United Kingdom, highlighted the magnitude of the project. "The East Anglia THREE marine construction program is the largest engineering feat we've ever undertaken. Seeing a 3.700-ton structure being lifted and positioned with precision is truly impressive," said Fernández, who also highlighted the excellent teamwork with his partners.
Fernández announced that the coming months will be busy, with the installation of more foundations, the completion of the converter station, and the laying of the cable network that will connect the wind turbines. "It's going to be an intense and exciting year," he concluded, marking the start of the countdown to the generation of the park's first clean energy project.
Tugboats also participated in the operation Bylgia, Skandi Handler and EEMS Wrangler, as well as the guard ship Tess, demonstrating the logistical complexity of this type of project.
