The European Commission proposes a budget of €193.260 billion to address global challenges in 2026.

La European Commission has presented its draft annual budget for 2026, amounting to €193.260 billion. This ambitious financial plan, which will be complemented by an additional €105.320 billion from the NextGenerationEU, seeks to address global challenges and strengthen the European Union in the face of an uncertain global outlook.

The 2026 budget is based on the mid-term review of the multiannual financial framework of the UE (2021-27), a measure adopted to respond to unforeseen events such as the global pandemic, the energy crisis and the increase in geopolitical tensions. Accordingly, key funding priorities will include continued support for Ukraine, the promotion of economic competitiveness of the EU, migration management, strengthening security and defense, and carrying out strategic investments. Likewise, a firm commitment to the ecological and digital transitions will be maintained.

Strategic Investments and Strengthened Cohesion

Beyond immediate priorities, the draft budget includes additional funding through a proposed mid-term review of cohesion policy. This initiative seeks to incentivize Member States to redirect cohesion funds toward emerging needs such as competitiveness, defense, affordable housing, water resilience, and the energy transition.

Breakdown of Proposed Expenditure

The 2026 annual budget will distribute its resources among several crucial policy areas, with the following main allocations:

Single market, innovation and digitalization: 22.054,4 billion euros
Cohesion, resilience and values: 71.726,1 billion euros
Natural resources and environment: 56.971,9 billion euros
Migration and border management: 5.010,0 trillion euros
Security and defense: 2.803,5 billion euros
Neighborhood and the world: 15.505,0 billion euros

Next steps

For its entry into force, the draft annual budget for 2026 must be formally adopted by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union before the end of the year. This approval process will be crucial in determining the EU's ability to respond effectively to the challenges ahead and consolidate its future.
