The European OPTIMAS project, led by monodon by Navantia, begins its journey

 

The European project OPTIMAS, lead by monodon by Navantia, has begun its journey towards developing a cutting-edge space-based optical communications system for multi-domain defence. This pioneering initiative seeks to set a new standard in high-speed communications and exceptional security, incorporating cutting-edge encryption technologies such as quantum key distribution (QKD).

 

OPTIMAS aims to revolutionize airborne laser communication systems, designed to operate in constellations of satellites and be applicable to various platforms, from space and air units (drones) to naval and land units. The goal is to provide secure, high-speed communications in any environment.

 

The final demonstrator of the project will focus on achieving high-speed, secure, two-way optical communications, with advanced capabilities for pointing, acquisition and tracking of satellites in low Earth orbits (LEO). In addition, its application in medium Earth orbits (MEO) and geostationary orbits (GEO) will be studied, significantly extending the range of the system.

 

OPTIMAS has a solid European consortium made up of 12 entities from 7 countries, with a notable Spanish participation of 6 organizations. monodon by Navantia leads the project, consolidating the leadership of Spain in advanced defense and communications technologies.

 

This project is part of the European Defence Fund (EDF) 2023 work programme, strengthening international cooperation in technological innovation for defence.

 

With this initiative, OPTIMAS is positioned as a fundamental project in the advancement of cyber-secure laser communications, promoting European collaboration and the technological leadership of monodon by Navantia in the field of multi-domain defense.
