Villaverde stressed the importance of these forums to coordinate actions that address the shared needs of the state ports and the 122 regional docks managed by the XuntaThe session highlighted progress in improving the port network, which has had a positive impact on freight and passenger traffic, and, crucially, fishing activity. This sector represents 5% of Galicia's GDP and generates nearly 50.000 jobs, with fishery exports reaching 2.800 billion euros annually. The meeting emphasized the need to continue investing in infrastructure to maintain competitiveness in a demanding global context.
It was also agreed to promote the sports docks under the initiative "Galicia, a unique port", seeking to strengthen its relevance nationally and internationally. This strategy is already showing results, with a turnover of €6,2 million in 2024 at the regional docks. The goal for this year is to exceed 5.800 foreign vessels and consolidate this activity as an economic driver for coastal communities, with a €1,2 million investment from Portos de Galicia for improvement and maintenance.
A critical point addressed was the unblocking of pending dredging works in the estuaries of Arousa, Pontevedra and Vigo, paralyzed since 2021 due to the lack of authorization from the Ministry of Ecological Transition for a discharge point. Portos de Galicia, together with the affected Port Authorities and CEDEX, formed a technical committee that, after four years of fieldwork, submitted a study of alternatives to MITECO in April. They urge the Ministry to authorize the discharge point to resume the 16 dredging projects in the Rías Baixas.
