The Port of Algeciras closed 2024 consolidating its position as one of Europe's leading ports, handling 103,46 million tons and 4,47 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), despite a slight decrease compared to the previous year. This achievement comes in an environment marked by geopolitical and economic uncertainty, which requires resilient management, according to Gerardo Landaluce , president of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA).
At a press conference, Landaluce emphasized that the port will celebrate its 50th anniversary of handling container traffic in 2025. He also highlighted the significant increase in full containers destined for import/export, reaching 453.313 TEUs, representing increases of 2,46% and 5%, respectively.
The port has also recorded a record high in road traffic with over 505.000 trucks, anticipating exceeding 800.000 before the end of the decade thanks to the rise of nearshoring . The accounts for the last fiscal year reflect a healthy financial situation with a positive EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) and no debt.
The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) plans to invest €505 million between 2024 and 2028 in various areas, including port infrastructure (€92 million) and sustainability (€55 million), including projects to equip local ports with onshore power supply (OPS) connections. A long-term Strategic Plan extending to 2040 is being developed in conjunction with KPMG to strengthen state policies toward the port.
Landaluce also addressed regulatory issues such as the ETS regulations on maritime emissions and stressed the urgent need for equitable global regulation. In parallel, it was announced that Algeciras is one of the seven hubs selected by Gemini Cooperation —an alliance between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd —to optimize port services.
Despite the announced move by Maersk to Tangier Med affecting key Andalusian exports such as olive oil to the US, other shipping companies are strengthening their routes from Algeciras to North America.
