The Port of Algeciras has reached a new milestone by handling over half a million trucks on the Algeciras-Tangier Med and Algeciras-Ceuta routes during 2024. The route to Tangier Med accounts for 93% of ro-ro traffic and has experienced steady growth since 2010, doubling in the last decade. This achievement follows a significant increase in traffic in November, exceeding all initial forecasts.
Gerardo Landaluce , president of the Port Authority, highlighted the port's efforts through the Hercules Plan , designed to manage this sustained growth, which could reach 800.000 trucks by 2030. He also emphasized the importance of the future Algeciras-Zaragoza rail freight corridor , which will allow for "transferring some of this unstoppable growth to rail."
Regarding passenger traffic, the first eleven months saw 5,45 million passengers (+7,1%) using the regular ferries between Algeciras and Ceuta/Tangier Med and Tarifa to Tangier City. Additionally, 1,42 million cars (+11%) traveled on these routes.
Total accumulated traffic through November reached 95,46 million tons (-0,48%), with stable figures compared to the previous year in TEU containers (4.378.526). Full containers destined for import and export showed increases of 1,98% and 4,97%, respectively.
On the other hand, liquid bulk cargo totaled 25,49 million tons (+7,42%), while solid bulk cargo decreased to 228.117 tons (-44,42%). General cargo totaled 63 million tons (-2,48%), and bunkering activity saw a 6% reduction, remaining above three million tons supplied.
Finally, fresh fish landings and sales at the fish market in both Tarifa and Algeciras amounted to 1.224 tons , representing a notable increase of +31%.
