The Port of Barcelona boosts its double-digit growth in foreign trade and investment

Traffic Diversification and Challenges

 

Regarding other traffic, liquid bulk showed a very positive performance, with 8,25 million tons and a growth of 22,1%, driven by transits and imports of gasoline and liquefied natural gas (LNG). In contrast, solid bulk fell by 21,9%, to 1,82 million tons, due to the dilutionreduction in imports of cereals and flours and a technical stop at the Elian terminal.

 

El new vehicle traffic experienced a 6,5% correction, reaching 362.951 units, affected by the fall in exports and transit, although imports (up 7%) and cabotage (up 11%) showed positive signs. Intermodal Transport Units (ITUs) remained stable at 218.237 units. Overall, the Port of Barcelona's global traffic in the first half of the year reached 34,68 million tons, a slight decrease of 3,2%.

 

Strategic Investments and Decarbonization

Key projects include the first phase of the Catalunya dock (€94 million tendered), the fourth phase of the Adossat dock for the third ferry terminal (€60 million tendered), the new superstructure for Cruise Terminal G (€6 million under tender), and the new berthing points for bulk liquids at the Energy dock (€124 million under tender).

 

In addition, the construction of the first has been put out to tender OPS (Onshore Power Supply) for cruise ships (€14 million) and the first phase of access to the Nou Llobregat area (€18 million). José Alberto Carbonell, president of the Port of Barcelona, announced that the only major project pending tender this year is the new medium-voltage electrical infrastructure for the Adossat dock, with an investment of approximately 16 million euros, which will be authorized in September.

 

Carbonell also emphasized the progress made in decarbonizing port activity, mentioning the commissioning of the OPS (Operating Station) for ferries at the Sant Bertran dock and the start of the OPS installation at the MSC cruise terminal. He also highlighted the approval of the Port's first Energy Transition Plan, a "strategic plan that systematically and clearly outlines all the effective actions needed to achieve the objectives" of a decarbonized Port of Barcelona.
