The Port of Santander breaks a historic record with more than 6 million tons of accumulated traffic in October

The Port of Santander reached an unprecedented milestone in its accumulated traffic in October 2024, exceeding 6 million tons between January and October, a growth of 4,3% compared to the same period of the previous year.

César Díaz , president of the Port Authority of Santander (APS), described these results as “excellent” and emphasized that they are “the best in the port’s history, not only in terms of volume, but also for having solidified general cargo as the main traffic at the Santander dock.” He added that general cargo traffic, at 3.108.980 tons, has grown by 30% compared to the previous year and represents 51,5% of the total, surpassing solid bulk (45,9%) and liquid bulk (2,6%). “We are very pleased because this is a high value-added product that directly impacts the economy and employment in Cantabria,” Díaz stated.

Container traffic has experienced a remarkable increase, reaching 127.306 TEUs (20-foot containers) between January and October, an increase of 202,9% compared to 2023. Likewise, passenger traffic grew by 8,9%, reaching 251.526 travelers, while the number of cruise passengers increased by 50%, with 34.070 passengers on 19 cruises compared to 15 the previous year.

Díaz stressed that these achievements are the result of the “significant investment effort by the APS in infrastructure and the quality of services provided by the port community”, key elements for offering customers “more and better logistics options”. With these results, the APS hopes to consolidate seven million tons by the end of the year and maintain sustained growth in the coming years.
