El Port of Santander has recorded a 3,1% growth in freight traffic between January and August 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 4.656.447 tonnes.
The year-on-year figure, which covers September 2023 to August 2024, stands at 7.128.837 tonnes, 4,7% more than the same period of the previous year, thus consolidating the objective of exceeding seven million tonnes set by the Port Authority of Santander (APS).
El president of the APS, César Díaz, he highlighted that these results are the fruit of the "significant increase in the general merchandise"This has established itself as the port's main traffic. "This is excellent news, as this type of traffic is high value-added, which directly impacts employment and the economy of the autonomous community," he emphasized.
Another relevant aspect has been the exponential growth of container traffic, with an increase of 232% compared to 2023.
In the first eight months of the year, 100.275 TEUs, equivalent to 886.019 tons, have been handled. Díaz stated that these figures place the Port of Santander "in an excellent position to be among the top ten national ports in container traffic."
The port president noted that these results are a result of the APS's "significant investment plan," focused on optimizing port infrastructure and improve intermodality with the railway.
