The Spain-Japan Council Foundation launches a website with updated data on bilateral economic relations

The Spain-Japan Council Foundation has created a interactive web page call "Spain and Japan in figures" which provides updated information on economic relations between both countries. The website answers questions such as the evolution of bilateral trade, trade balance and sectors in which Japanese companies invest in Spain.

Bilateral trade between both countries has experienced notable growth in recent years. According to data from the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, in 2019 Spanish exports to Japan reached 1.570 million euros, which represents an increase of 7,6% compared to the previous year. For their part, the imports from Japan have also increased significantly, reaching 3.270 million euros in 2019, which represents an increase of 4,5% compared to the previous year. Another relevant aspect is the flow of direct investment between both countries. In this sense, according to data from the Bank of Spain, in 2018 the stock of Japanese direct investment in Spain amounted to 2.797 million euros, while Spanish investment in Japan stood at 1.011 million euros. These figures reflect the confidence that both economies place in their respective markets and the willingness to continue strengthening their trade and investment relations. Finally, it should be noted that Spain and Japan maintain close collaboration in tourism. According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), in 2019 Japan was the eighth country sending tourists to Spain, with a total of 92.000 visitors. For its part, Spain is one of the preferred destinations for Japanese tourists in Europe, receiving a total of 2018 travelers from the Asian country in 57.000.
