The cured ham sector exported 19.538 tons during the first half of 2020

EU countries imported 80% of cured ham exports

Exports during the first half of 2020 stood at 19.538,11 tons compared to the 21.540,88 tons exported in the same period of the previous year.

El Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium (CJSE) announces the export figures for Spanish cured hams/palettes in the sector during the first half of 2020, a period in which, according to data from Customs and Tax Agency, a total of 19.538,11 tons were exported compared to the volume obtained during the same period of 2019 with 21.540,88 tons exported; which has meant a drop of 9,30%.

 

However, the average price per kilo of ham has increased during this year, reaching 9,86 euros, which represents an increase of 6,73% compared to 2019, when the cost was 9,24 euros/ kg. Furthermore, it should be noted that the average price in countries of the European Union stood at 9,19 euros, compared to 12,52 euros in the Third Countries; leading to an increase of 7,12% and 2,74% respectively. “We estimate this increase in average prices to be possibly due to the influence of Iberian products and greater marketing of fractionated products. During the crisis of COVID-19, the consumption of self-sliced ​​products has increased to the detriment of counter-cut formats,” he explains. Regarding the value of global turnover, during this period exports were carried out for a total value of 192.668.323,13 euros compared to 199.015.528,79 the previous year, which represents a decrease of 3,19% .

 

The countries of the European Union that have seen the value of their exports increase during the first half of the year have been The Netherlands by 16,29% and Belgium by 3,67%. Despite not being part of the European Union, it is also worth highlighting the growth of United Kingdom, which has increased the value of its exports by 11,70%. Furthermore, the trend continues in which the main markets in terms of value are countries of the European Union , the Germany and France, which account for 45% of the exports of this product, followed by Portugal and Italy.

 

 

The countries that have represented the most notable growth in terms of value have been the US, China and Australia

 

 

The Third Countries that have reflected a more significant growth in terms of value compared to the same period of the previous year have been U.S. with an increase of 56,05%, followed by China by 50,28% and Australia by 38,94%, data that confirms the upward valuation of this product by foreign consumers. On the other hand, Chile has experienced a decrease of 39,47%, while Mexico has suffered a drop of 15,49%.

 

Regarding the format of the pieces of ham, 16,21% of the pieces exported in this period correspond to bone-in format, a figure similar to that of the previous year, whose export volume was 16,37%. For its part, in the countries where this format has been consumed the most, they have been Portugal, with 58,50%, followed by China, with 43,97%, and U.S., with 37,14%; while the markets that have registered a most significant increase compared to the first half of the year have been the US by 138,26%, The Netherlands by 94,06% and Sweden in an 91,11%.

 

In turn, the Consorcio del Jamón Serrano Español During this year, it has sealed a total of 344.081 pieces under the Consorcio Serrano quality seal, which represents an increase of 3,90% in its exports. Some figures that have been obtained thanks to the intense work of international promotion that the entity carries out in its strategic markets together with ICEX Spain Export and Investments since its inception, which has led it to obtain record figures in its exports through milestones such as the sealing of the 16 millionth piece.

 

"During this period, we observed that exports of cured ham have generally decreased in the sector, despite the good performance of countries such as USA or China, in which they have increased significantly. However, the drop in volume contrasts with the rise that the sector has experienced in terms of average prices, because the sliced ​​format is gradually growing, and we estimate an increasingly important influence of the Iberian on the value of exports," underlines Carlos del Hoyo.
